How to thaw your credit for a loan, card, or apartment

A frozen credit report is the right default. When you apply for credit, lift the freeze briefly, apply, then refreeze. Here's how to do it without leaving your file open longer than you need.

1. Ask which bureau the lender uses

Many lenders, landlords, and carriers check only one or two bureaus. Ask before you apply. If they use only Experian, you only need to lift Experian. If they don't know, lift all three.

2. Lift it temporarily, not permanently

Each bureau lets you lift a freeze for a date range you choose, after which it refreezes on its own. Pick a window that covers the application:

An online or phone lift must take effect within one hour, so you can do it right before you apply.

3. Apply

Lenders pull your report during the window. If an application stalls or is declined because your file couldn't be read, check that you lifted the bureau that lender uses.

4. Refreeze

If you chose a date range, the freeze comes back on its own. If you removed it entirely, put it back as soon as the decision is in.

The easy way

CreditYeti lets you thaw any bureau for exactly as long as you need, then puts it back on ice, all from one app. It reminds you before the refreeze and confirms when you're frozen again.

A lift requested online or by phone must take effect within one hour.

Do I need to unfreeze all three bureaus to apply?

Not always. Ask the lender which bureau it uses and lift only that one. If they don’t know, lift all three.
